Definition
An A2L refrigerant is one classified under ASHRAE Standard 34 as lower toxicity (class A) and lower flammability (class 2L), meaning it is hard to ignite and burns slowly if it does. R-32 and R-454B, the main replacements for R-410A in new U.S. home systems, are both A2L. Equipment built for them follows the UL 60335-2-40 safety standard.
Also called: A2L
Why it matters to you.
Mild flammability does not make a new system a fire hazard; the safety standard builds leak detection and mitigation into the equipment, and many installations include a refrigerant sensor. In Central Kentucky homes with air handlers or furnaces in crawlspaces, basements, closets or attics, that sensor is part of a safe installation.
Practical guidance.
If a quote includes A2L equipment, ask how the refrigerant detection system is installed and wired. Never unplug, disable or cover a refrigerant sensor, and leave all refrigerant work to a certified technician.
