What is Gas Piping (Gas Line)?

Definition

Gas piping is the system of pipes, fittings, shutoff valves and appliance connectors that carries natural gas or propane from the meter or tank to furnaces, water heaters, ranges, dryers and other appliances. Common materials include black steel and corrugated stainless steel tubing (CSST). Sizing, installation and pressure testing follow a fuel gas code such as NFPA 54.

Also called: Gas line, Fuel gas piping

Why it matters to you.

Adding a gas furnace, range, fireplace or standby generator in a Central Kentucky home, or replacing aging lines in older housing, usually means extending or resizing gas piping so every appliance gets enough supply. Rural homes on propane have their own tank, regulator and line runs that need the same care.

Practical guidance.

Know where your meter or tank shutoff is, and if you smell gas, leave immediately, avoid switches and flames and call from outside. Extending, replacing or repairing a gas line is licensed work that needs a permit and a final pressure and safety check, never a DIY fitting.
