What is a Kentucky HVAC License?

Definition

A Kentucky HVAC license is the state credential for heating, ventilation and air conditioning work, issued by the Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction's Division of HVAC under KRS Chapter 198B. The two license levels are master HVAC contractor, who supervises all work and pulls permits, and journeyman HVAC mechanic, who works under a master.

Also called: Master HVAC contractor license, Journeyman HVAC mechanic license

Why it matters to you.

In Kentucky, HVAC permits are issued only to licensed master HVAC contractors (outside a narrow homeowner exception), and the master is responsible for the work of the company's employees and subcontractors. Feistritzer's Kentucky HVAC license number is M02584.

Practical guidance.

Ask for the contractor's Kentucky HVAC license number and confirm it is active with HBC before signing. Licenses renew yearly with continuing education, and masters must show proof of insurance; refrigerant handling also requires a separate federal EPA Section 608 certification.
