What is a Kentucky HVAC Permit?

Definition

A Kentucky HVAC permit is a construction permit for installing, altering or replacing heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment, issued under KRS Chapter 198B and state regulation 815 KAR 8:070 through the Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction's Division of HVAC. Permits go to licensed master HVAC contractors, with a narrow homeowner exception, and include inspections.

Also called: HVAC construction permit, HVAC installation permit

Why it matters to you.

Qualifying HVAC work in Boyle County requires a state HVAC permit and inspection, and Kentucky's permit regulation lists furnace, condensing unit and heat pump replacements among the work it covers. A permitted, inspected installation is third-party evidence the work met code, which can matter at resale or on an insurance claim.

Practical guidance.

Ask every bidder who pulls the permit, whether it is included in the quote and when inspections happen; Feistritzer handles the state permit paperwork as part of every installation. This is general information, not legal advice, so confirm current requirements with HBC's Division of HVAC or your local inspection office.

Do I need a permit to replace a furnace, AC or heat pump in Kentucky?

Kentucky's installation-permit regulation, 815 KAR 8:070, lists the replacement of furnaces, condensing units, heat pumps and fan coil units among the work for which permits are issued and inspections performed. In Boyle County, qualifying HVAC work requires a state permit and inspection. Some local governments run their own HVAC inspection programs, so confirm the rules for your address.

Who can pull an HVAC permit in Kentucky?

Under 815 KAR 8:070, HVAC permits are issued only to a licensed master HVAC contractor, with one exception: a homeowner installing a system in their own legal residence. That homeowner must file an affidavit, proof of proper system sizing and a duct design, personally perform all the work, and may receive only one homeowner permit in a five-year period.

What inspections come with a Kentucky HVAC permit?

815 KAR 8:070 states that each HVAC system permit includes three inspections at no additional cost, with any further inspections charged separately. Inspections confirm the installation against the Kentucky Residential Code or Kentucky Building Code. On a homeowner permit, the state form makes the homeowner responsible for requesting every required inspection.

How much does a Kentucky HVAC permit cost, and how long does it take?

Permit fees are set by state regulation and can change, and inspection scheduling depends on the inspecting office's workload, so we do not quote a figure here. Ask your contractor whether the permit is already included in your quote, and check current fees with HBC's Division of HVAC.
