What is a Smart Thermostat?

Definition

A smart thermostat is a Wi-Fi connected wall control that schedules heating and cooling, can be adjusted from a smartphone app and often learns occupancy patterns or uses remote sensors. Many report runtime and energy use, send maintenance or fault alerts and support heat pump, multi-stage and dual-fuel equipment. ENERGY STAR certifies models that meet its criteria.

Also called: Wi-Fi thermostat, Connected thermostat

Why it matters to you.

Many Central Kentucky homes run heat pumps or dual-fuel systems, and a smart thermostat must be configured for them so it switches between the heat pump and furnace correctly and does not lean on backup heat after a setback. Remote sensors can also help in older homes where the thermostat sits far from the rooms that run hot or cold.

Practical guidance.

Before buying, confirm the model supports your equipment type and whether it needs a common (C) wire at the thermostat. Homeowners can set schedules and app alerts; configuring dual-fuel switchover, auxiliary heat lockouts or wiring at the equipment is technician work.
